Rhode Island and Connecticut wineries business strategy, performance, and management capabilities: a survey of managerial practices

    Get PDF
New wineries in less traditional wine regions have broadened the concept of the wine industry by linking it with tourism; perhaps with more strength than in other more traditional areas, where this change in the business model has also occurred. To understand what the drivers of a better performance to this new typology of wineries are, this article has surveyed the wineries of the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island, in the northeast of the U.S., a new wine region. Through a questionnaire, the strategies these wineries follow and their relevant management capabilities in relationship with their performance have been analyzed. The conclusions show how the management capabilities the wineries own are as important as the strategy of differentiation they follow in their pursue and obtention of a competitive advantage; and that it is a service and tourism-oriented strategy that eventually facilitates this advantage. The managerial skills of creating an efficient and coordinated organizational structure together with their conception of this service-oriented business, where the tourism aspect plays a fundamental role, seems evident when defining the resources and capabilities that generate their sustainable performance

An update of the worlds of wine: The emerging countries' influence

    Get PDF
The article re-categorises two concepts widely used in the literature of wine, old world and new world. It generates a new classification of the world of wine in terms of the up-to-date paths of production, consumption, and global trade expansion in the last decades: emerging countries competing with developed countries. While determining the temporal and geographical location of the major transformations that happened in the wine industry in the last six decades, the article opens the discussion for a better and updated characterisation of the worlds of wine. It is imperative to compare and examine wine countries within their structural local and global economic and competitive context; it is then relevant to use a 21st-century classification like the one this article proposes (developed versus emerging countries) rather than a 20th-century characterisation (old world versus new world) when describing, analysing, and defining the worlds of wine.Fil: Villanueva, Emiliano C..

Wine is a multi-attribute product and one of great differentiation. Consumers do not know wines’ intrinsic properties before its purchase; consumers need and look for extrinsic signals that allow them to infer those intrinsic properties. To evaluate those intrinsic wine properties, the article uses price as an extrinsic signal to express their value. The price used is a comparison between the prices suggested by the specialized guides and the ones proposed directly to the consumer at the on-line stores. With the hedonic price methodology, which relates price and attributes, the article shows the convergence between the value referenced (price) by the Spanish experts and the one paid (price) in the Spanish market, the former being independent of the interests of the economic agents and the latter not. Regional reputation is the only attribute that positively impacts the price of Castilian wine and is prioritized in the ranking of attributes.El vino es un producto de atributos múltiples y de gran diferenciación. The Demographic and Socio-Economic Profile of U.S. Wine Consumers (1972-2012)

This article presents a historical, empirical, and econometric description of American wine consumers’ demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (1972-2012). By the application of a general demand model that specifies the years of change in the structure of wine consumption in the U.S., it is shown that the evolution of wine consumption in the U.S. between 1972 and 2012 has three distinct stages; a first stage of growing wine consumption, a second stage of decline of wine consumption, and a third stage of recovery and substantial growth of wine consumption. With a model identifying the demographic and socioeconomic profile of the average American wine consumer for those years, it was then discovered that wine used to be a product associated with higher income, higher education level consumers; and it is now described as a product consumed by the younger generation, married people, and women

Teaching Instrumental Analytical Chemistry during COVID-19 Times in a Developing Country: Asynchronous versus Synchronous Communication

On Mar. 19, 2020, Argentina’s government decided to close academic institutions for an indefinite time in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the University established that, when the quarantine ends, 5 weeks will be reserved for face-to-face activities that could not be carried out virtually (laboratory lessons and final exams), the main focus on the online activities was in the theoretical lessons. For the Instrumental Analytical Chemistry course both synchronous strategy such as questions and answer sessions and asynchronous communication such as Microsoft PowerPoint presentations with explicative audios, simulated assays, and assignments were adopted. A survey conducted with our students indicated that although synchronous lessons provided face-to-face interaction, the lack of good Internet connectivity was the main weakness of this strategy. On the other hand, asynchronous lessons did not require very high bandwidth networks and had the possibility of stopping the lesson and continuing it later. However, students’ lack of interaction with their teachers was the main drawback of this type of communication. Most of the students pointed out that a blend of synchronous and asynchronous communication is more desirable for Instrumental Analytical Chemistry lessons than asynchronous or synchronous communication separately.Fil: Villanueva, María Emilia. The ETNA mission concept: Assessing the habitability of an active ocean world

    Get PDF
Enceladus is an icy world with potentially habitable conditions, as suggested by the coincident presence of a subsurface ocean, an active energy source due to water-rock interactions, and the basic chemical ingredients necessary for terrestrial life. Among all ocean worlds in our Solar System, Enceladus is the only active body that provides direct access to its ocean through the ongoing expulsion of subsurface material from erupting plumes. Here we present the Enceladus Touchdown aNalyzing Astrobiology (ETNA) mission, a concept designed during the 2019 Caltech Space Challenge. ETNA’s goals are to determine whether Enceladus provides habitable conditions and what (pre-) biotic signatures characterize Enceladus. ETNA would sample and analyze expelled plume materials at the South Polar Terrain (SPT) during plume fly-throughs and landed operations. An orbiter includes an ultraviolet imaging spectrometer, an optical camera, and radio science and a landed laboratory includes an ion microscope and mass spectrometer suite, temperature sensors, and an optical camera, plus three seismic geophones deployed during landing. The nominal mission timeline is 2 years in the Saturnian system and ∼1 year in Enceladus orbit with landed operations. The detailed exploration of Enceladus’ plumes and SPT would achieve broad and transformational Solar System science related to the building of habitable worlds and the presence of life elsewhere. The nature of such a mission is particularly timely and relevant given the recently released Origins, Worlds, and Life: A Decadal Strategy for Planetary Science and Astrobiology 2023–2032, which includes a priority recommendation for the dedicated exploration of Enceladus and its habitable potential
